Ingredients in Mesa Lavender Farms 4 Luscious Body Butters

The ingredients used in our 4 luscious body butters included Jojoba oil, Sunflower oil, Meadowfoam oil, lavender essential oil. and fragrances.

Jojoba oil is from the seeds of a drought-resistant perennial shrub native to southern California and Arizona, and Northwestern Mexico. Jojoba oil is widely used in cosmetic formulas such as sunscreens and moisturizers due to its proven anti-inflammatory effect and been found to be an effective treatment for lesioned skin and mild acne vulgaris.

Sunflower seed oil is used as a newborn massage and been found to accelerate skin barrier recovery following damage. If it is safe and effective on newborn babies it is certainly an effective component for your skin. The use of mustard seed oil, on the other hand, may cause further skin barrier damage hence the reason we don’t use mustard seed oil in our body butters or lotions.

Meadowfoam seed oil comes from a plant native to Oregon, California, and Western Canada. The seeds are 20-30% oil. The plant with the botanical name Limnanthes alba has white, flowers.  The plant also goes by the botanical name Limnanthes alba. Meadowfoam oil has one of the highest stabilities of any vegetable oil with a long shelf life.  One of the many benefits of Meadowfoam seed oil is its ability to reduce stretch marks.

The lavender essential oil used in these 4 luscious body butters are from floral stems grown and harvested on Mesa Lavender Farms in Grand Junction Colorado. We use the essential oil of the Lavandin ‘Grosso’. This cultivar is the most fragrant of all lavenders, comprising ~70% of the world’s products of lavender essential oils.

Lavandins are hybrids referred to as Lavandula hybrida in Europe. In the US we typically refer to the hybrids as Lavandula x intermedia.

‘Grosso’ is a cross between a Lavandula angustifolia, and Lavandula latifolia. It is a larger version of either parent producing essential oils with more camphor than L. angustifolia. ‘Grosso’ was discovered in 1972 in the Vaucluse district in the Australian state of New South Wales by Mr. Pierre Grosso, a local farmer  who had been growing lavandins since 1931.

In addition to being used to produce many of Mesa Lavender Farms products, its long stems are excellent for dried bouquets, and its buds are use for potpourris. Buds is a common term used to describe the calyces of the flower. You can think of the calyx (plural calyces) as the green petal-like structures under the petals of a common flower like a rose. In the Mint family, of which lavender is a member, those green petal-like structures change color and turn into a vase-like structure forming a tube. The petals protrude from this tube.

A bud, in botanical speak is a structure from which other structures emerge such as a flower, stems or leaves. So, technically, the lavender ‘bud’ is not a true bud.
